Once an enemy

The power inside of me surges through my veins.
As I stare down upon you, you gently call my name.
One hand on your weapon, one outstretched to me.
Are you not afraid of the beast that you see?

Do you expect us rivals to become friends at last?
To set apart our differences, to throw away the past?
A knight and a dragon cannot share a bond.
We do not agree, so we do not belong.

How can you trust a creature that was sworn to be your enemy?
I am nothing but a monster, a vile fiery fiend.
One that has killed many, the blood stained in my scales.
With jagged claws and giant wings, and teeth as sharp as nails.

You continue to try and change my mind, but it is already set.
I choose to decline your offer, a move that I will regret.
It is better if I am just left alone, for it is of no use.
To attempt to change me from what I am, and kill my spirit too.

My temper is wrapped around my heart, keeping me in place.
As if I were anchored to the ground, tangled up in chains.
My ancestors were murderers too, nothing much has changed.
But here you stand before me, denying my every claim.

You place a hand on my chest and look into my eyes.
Instantly the fire within me smolders, and I can't understand why.
Just one touch was all it took to make my hatred end.
I lower my head and bow to you, my master, my friend.
